The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, more commonly known as the Speaker of the House, is the presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives. This office was established in 1789, in the United States Constitution, Article I, Section 2, which says "The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker...". The Speaker is not mandated to be a member of Congress, but no non-member has ever been appointed to the office.

The Speaker is appointed the first day a new Congress is in session and is sworn in by the Dean of the House, the chamber's longest-serving member. In modern practice, the Speaker is selected by senior leaders of the majority party.

In addition to presiding over the House, the Speaker conducts administrative and procedural functions, and represents their congressional district.

The current Speaker of the House is John Boehner, who represents Ohio's eighth district.
