Josef Stalin

Josef Vissarionovich Stalin (Russian: Иосиф Виссарионович Сталин)[1](December 18, 1878- March 5, 1953)[2] was a Bolshevik revolutionary who fought in the October Revolution and was dictator of the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. He used brute force to industrialize the Soviet Union.

He was born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili (იოსებ ბესარიონის ძე ჯუღაშვილი in the Georgian alphabet). He was raised in the Georgian Orthodox Church, and attended seminary for some time, but was expelled, and abandoned the religion of his upbringing in favor of Marxism.

[edit] References

  1. His first name is sometimes given as Josef and other times as Joseph. Both are correct; they represent different approaches to transliterating Russian into English.
  2. Historical sources are inconsistent as to whether Stalin was born in 1878 or 1879. His baptismal and school records indicate he was born in 1878, but he later claimed to have been born in 1879 instead; it is unclear which of the two is correct
